How "Free" is Free Trade?
Posted by Renfield on Thursday, July 04, 2002 - 08:11 AM 4848 Reads
Economics reprinted in whole with permission of LibertarianRant.com.

Let's talk trade and tariffs. In a town hall meeting in Kansas City a few weeks back, U.S. Commerce Secretary Don Evans emphasized the importance of free trade. He announced "that open markets and free markets, and fair markets around the world benefit American families."

Of course, I'd love to hear a more detailed discussion of what consititutes a "fair" market, and who exactly gets to define the meaning of "fair."

State’s Tax Hikes Cause Business Closures

Economics State’s Tax Hikes Cause Business Closures

I have yet to hear anyone mention the obvious correlation between the recent plant closings in Moore County and the tax hikes our esteemed state legislature imposed upon the taxpayers of North Carolina recently. Governor Mike Easley was quoted as saying, “North Carolina is moving forward. We will not sit idle and wait for better economic days. Our state has come together like never before to ensure that our children get the education they deserve and our most vulnerable citizens get the care they need.”

Forward?

Property Improvements A Benefit to All Without Increased Taxes
Posted by matt7267 on Wednesday, March 06, 2002 - 08:08 PM 5238 Reads
Economics Recently, for the first time in my young life, I came in contact with a property tax assessor. I marveled at the way he surveyed the house, the land, and the new tool shed in the back yard. I watched him intently as he carefully surveyed the new additions to the house, two decks and a tool shed. They were not built the last time the county came through.

Perhaps it is my young, naïve attitude that caused me to be so amazed that these new features to the house brought with them additional taxes. Or perhaps it is also my small government libertarian nature that caused me to be so outraged by this.

Social Security - NYTimes loves the math
Posted by Renfield on Wednesday, March 06, 2002 - 06:52 PM 5029 Reads
Economics A Libertarian Reads the Paper has posted the following on his weblog. I love this guy's work-
Paul Krugman, as usual, obscures some truth in an anti-Republican tirade. It's true that they are misleading the public, but guess what, so are the Democrats (that would include Krugman).

Private accounts won't "save" Social Security. On the contrary, they will create a financing crisis, requiring sharp benefit cuts, large infusions of money from unspecified outside sources, or both.
What Krugman neglects to mention is that maintaining the current system will cost even more, and will likely mean much higher taxes. But since that's what Krugman wants anyway, I guess it's not really a concern.
