Alaska Passes Anti-Patriot Act Resolution; Second State to Oppose Feds

May 23? Alaska has joined a growing national rebellion against the USA Patriot Act, voting to oppose the massive federal anti-terrorism law passed by Congress soon after Sept. 11, 2001.

Alarmed Republicans, Conservatives Swell ACLU Ranks
Posted by matt7267 on Saturday, June 14, 2003 - 02:12 PM 8237 Reads
News Membership in the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has surged dramatically
-- and a large part of that increase is from conservatives and Republicans.

That's striking, because conservatives have traditionally loathed the ACLU. So why the change?

It's because lots of liberty-minded conservatives are becoming alarmed that the
Bush administration's draconian anti-terrorism measures (such as the

police-state USA PATRIOT Act) are threatening the Constitution, the Bill of

Rights, and fundamental American liberties.

Copyright and DRM - not just for computer geeks anymore
Posted by Lunenburg on Wednesday, July 03, 2002 - 06:11 PM 5129 Reads
News Those of us in the computer field are growing more concerned every day with the push by the entertainment industry to gain control over technology and information. With astronomical copyright terms (effectively over 100 years now for most works), and the thread of Digital Rights Management (which will take control of the media that you buy out of your hands), it's looking like dark days ahead for the future of media and technology.

One perspective on the issue can be found at Dangerous Visions of the SSSCA, showing how a proposed Hollywood-bought law will affect everyone's rights to digital technology in the future.

CARP / Library of Congress hurt WebCasting
Posted by Renfield on Friday, June 21, 2002 - 05:55 AM 1585 Reads
News In a move that will hurt hundreds of thousands, nay, millions, of web-casters and their listeners, CARP and the Library of Congress agreed upon royalty fees that web-casters will be responsible for paying to RIAA members.

Hundreds of thousands of web-casters will be put out of commission, because the fees are greater than 100% of their income.

Dr. Nagle, an economist in the RIAA's employ calls this "inconsequential."

http://www.kurthanson.com/ is running a great write-up on what happened with this decision, why the RIAA isn't satisfied with what they got, and what Rep. Rick Boucher (D-Va) intends to do about it. Boucher has been on the side of protecting and preserving Fair Use Rights at every opportunity.

Government Needs to Focus Its Resources

News Government Needs to Focus Its Resources

Imagine for a second that you are a government official.

You are in charge of protecting American citizens from harm. One man owns a computer company that is responsible for providing millions of Americans with relatively inexpensive software. Another is a senior in college, who, on occasion, smokes marijuana. The other operates hundreds of terrorists cells throughout the world, organizes suicide bombings, blows up American aircraft carriers, and coordinates the largest terrorist attack in American history.

Who is more of a threat?
